Sierra Leone’s schools have been closed since Ebola first hit the country last summer, but that doesn’t mean the lessons have stopped. Last October the country partnered with UNICEF to provide school lessons through the radio, and the program has done impressively well. About 500,000 of the over one million students out of school tune in for their lessons daily. And if you’re wondering about the grade discrepancies they have two episodes—one in the morning for younger children and one in the evening for older children. While radio education is no replacement for the schoolhouse, it’s better than nothing, and thankfully schools are scheduled to reopen in March.
