Biofuels, much like solar in the 90s, has to overcome the high cost of production, and increase its efficiency so that it is more viable for commercial use. Researchers from California have now created a new pre-treatment method that greatly reduces the cost of production. Biofuel is created when enzymes breakdown biowaste. The new pretreatment uses a mixture of diluted acids to lower the number of enzymes needed to breakdown the biowaste. With the new method researchers successfully used 10 percent of the enzymes to create biofuel, saving 90 cents on every dollar spent on enzymes. This new method is a big step forward toward bringing biomass further into the mainstream.
