CO2 levels have been rising together with economic growth for decades causing the climate change that threatens society. However, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2014—for the first time in 40 years—the world economy grew, but greenhouse gas emissions didn’t. Previously CO2 emissions only decreased during substantial economic downturns. IEA explains the breakthrough by China increasingly shifting to renewables while OECD countries adding more renewable energy combined with more energy efficiency.
