Future health crises may benefit from the unwinding Ebola epidemic, after its mismanagement by the international community was widely acknowledged by all parties. The World Health Organization (WHO) has proposals in the work to build-up a rapid response team to react more swiftly to future threats. “We are learning lessons,” WHO officials told the BBC, after admitting to being “too slow” and “arrogant” in the face of the dire warnings issues to them by humanitarian aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières. The Ebola epidemic was declared one year ago in Guinea, before spreading to Liberia and Sierra Leone, killing 10,314 people as of March 21, 2015, according to WHO data. A chastened head of the UN Ebola mission ventured to say that he foresees the epidemic to be declared over by next August.
