Hardly a feature-length documentary film has been as necessary and timely as Seeds of Time. The film tracks the history and mission of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault — sometimes called the Doomsday Vault — and its founder Cary Fowler. His endeavor to collect the seeds of some 2 million varieties of plants, and save them in a vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, 810 miles from the North Pole, in the event of a cultivated biodiversity collapse, is the stuff of legends. Understanding his motive is understanding the crucial role of biodiversity to human survival. It’s understanding that seeds, as evolved by Nature to thrive in an infinite number of climate and soil conditions, are truly our key to our future of food. The film is due to open on May 22, 2015 at Cinema Village in New York City.
