Coffee can do more than give you that extra energy boost in the morning. In a study analyzing data from 430,000 participants, the study found that “increasing coffee consumptions by two cups per day was associated with a statistically significant reduction in the risk of cirrhosis” and that the risks reduced as coffee consumption increased further. Risk of cirrhosis was 22% lower after one cup of coffee per day, 43% lower after two cups, 57% lower after three cups and 67% lower after four cups. Although the reason why is still unknown, the scientists believe it’s plausible that coffee protects against the inflammatory and fibrotic process that leads to cirrhosis. It’s important to note that drinking a few cups of coffee won’t be enough on its own to counter the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle that leads to cirrhosis, but it does provide an extra reason for you to grab yourself a cup of coffee.
