With 53 million Americans working as freelancers, it was only a matter of time before social-media style platforms would emerge to help organize this fluid and nimble workforce seemingly devoid of bargaining power with employers. A team of Stanford researchers took the first shot at creating one. Dynamo was designed especially for people who pick assignments (“Human Intelligence Tasks”) through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a crowd-powered internet work platform. No hierarchical structure here, but simply the power of community being shaped into an effective tool in order to defend workers’ rights and interests in the fast evolving crowdsourcing economy.
