Today’s Solutions: May 06, 2024

Europe and the United States are struggling with refugee and immigrant problems driving highly charged debates triggered by populist politicians. In the mean time, Australia is implementing a different response. The country is aggressively leading a global competition for highly-skilled professionals. Nearly seven out of ten immigrants in Australia is accepted based on being able to do jobs in fields such as engineering where, according to the Australian government, there are not enough domestic workers to fill positions. Similar skills gaps exist in Europe, and the U.S. The Australian approach is a bit opportunistic, and it doesn’t address the core of the humanitarian issues. However, it’s a refreshing alternative that helps turn the debate in a solutions-oriented, positive direction.
