Illegal wildlife trade is a $20 billion global market. Killed for its horn, the rhinoceros is a primary target. The Western Black Rhinoceros was hunted to extinction and only five known Northern White Rhinoceros remain. San Francisco startup Pembient recently demonstrated it can use keratin to 3D print rhino horns replicas that are genetically and aesthetically identical to the real thing. And much cheaper too. Once it has perfected the rhino horn, Pembient intends to apply the same approach to ivory and other animal products that typically sustain poachers’ business.
