The World Cup is over. Brazil spent about 12 billion US dollar on building 12 new stadiums as well as host the championship. And the soccer-crazy country didn’t become world champions. This outcome fuels the already strong protest forces that argue that Brazil should have spent all that money on more important things like poverty alleviation. Architects Axel de Stampa and Sylvain Macaux from 1Week1Project have a plan that may even meet the approval of the World Cup opponents. They have created a design that retrofits living containers to the stadiums, essentially turning them into giant housing projects. The new design could be an answer to Brazil’s housing shortage, and ease overcrowding in city centers.
