Fighting poverty is hard. Development initiatives focus on building infrastructure and creating the right circumstances for people to succeed. However, a new book presents a simple idea with a big promise for people and planet: Good nutrition. The first 1,000 days of life—from the moment a woman becomes pregnant to the second birthday of a child—are critical for the foundation of strong physical growth and brain development. If a newborn gets well through these first 1,000 days, s/he can become a strong person with the capacity to be creative and successful and to leave poverty behind. So, fighting poverty may simply mean feeding every new child well, and that’s not just a problem for the developing world.
