Transparency is a magic word when it comes to progress and positive change. The British grocery chain Asda is the first major supermarket to publish a Seafood Sustainability Report. The report, called the Wild Fisheries Annual Review, looks at all fisheries the grocery store has done business with between January 1st and December 1st 2013. The report then assigns each fishery a score between 1 and 10 based on how sustainable the catching process was, methods used to catch the fish and the overall environmental impact. Based on the score the seafood is labeled Category A for ‘great’, Category B for ‘OK’, or Category C for ‘needing substantial improvement’. Fish farms aren’t included in the report, but Asda aims to change this in next year’s analysis.
