The world’s growing demand for palm oil, which is used in nearly half of all packaged food in supermarkets, has led to the destruction of critical rainforest lands that have been replaced by plantations. In fact, Indonesia’s burning rainforests released more climate pollution, day by day, than the entire U.S economy in 2015. That’s why Bay Area-based startup Kiverdi has created the first viable alternative to palm oil, and it’s made using waste carbon dioxide. So whereas traditional producing methods releases heinous amounts of carbon and takes months to make, Kiverdi’s process keeps carbon from entering the atmosphere and only takes hours. With Kiverdi’s palm oil clearly being the better choice, expect to see many brands switch over once the product gets up to scale.
