Cicadas make a sharp noise with their wings. That is because their wings are covered in an array of nanoscale spikes. Earlier this year scientists were able to copy this structure to create a highly effective antibacterial surface. Now, researchers have replicated those spikes’ antireflective properties to create more efficient solar cells.
