During the final day of the U.N Climate Change Conference in Morocco last week, an ambitious goal was set by 47 of the worlds poorest nations to skip fossil fuels altogether and jump straight to using 100% renewable energy. Developing countries have traditionally grown economically through industrialization made possible by the use of fossil fuels, but under this agreement, fossil fuels will not be a part of the equation. Instead, these 47 countries—which include nations like Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Haiti – will strive for 100% domestic renewable energy somewhere between 2030 and 2050. The members of the agreement have committed to presenting a detailed plan to the U.N by 2020.
