Ultra low-cost airlines like Spirit and Frontier have changed the airline industry in the U.S. Their inexpensive flights have given U.S. travelers the opportunity to fly without breaking the budget, and now larger competitors are giving into the idea of low-cost fares. Just this week, American Airlines began selling Basic Economy fares, which effectively sell space on an airplane and charge extra for amenities like overhead bin space and seat selection. Such a deal isn’t so useful for travelers who carry lots of luggage with them, but for the low-maintenance traveler, deals like this are perfect.
