The relationship between speed and traffic accidents is clearly established. So it’s counterintuitive that Britain is raising the speed limit for trucks in an attempt to reduce the number of fatal car accidents. You know the situation: you’re on a two-lane highway and get stuck behind a slow moving truck, then you pass the slow truck on the other side of the broken line. While you’re maneuver is legal, it is still dangerous. Britain is now increasing the speed limit for trucks from 40 to 50 mph decreasing the speed discrepancy between trucks and other motorists. The measure aims to minimize the instances where people will over take on two-lane highways, thus reducing the number of accidents.
