While Tylenol is the go-to drug for many when they’re experiencing back pain, new research suggests that acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, might be just as effective at curing back pain as a placebo. The study published in Lancet medical journal took 1,600 people who experienced lower back pain and divided them into three groups: some given acetaminophen regularly, some given it as needed, and some given a placebo. The results of the study were that there was no noticeable difference between the three groups in terms of how pain subsided after the placebo or acetaminophen was administered.
