Today’s Solutions: April 18, 2024

Three years ago the rainforests of Indonesia, and the species that rely on them, seemed doomed. This week they received a great piece of news — the latest in a series of recent developments that has the trend now leaning heavily toward their conservation and restoration: Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL), one of the world’s largest pulp and paper makers, pledged to eliminate deforestation from its operations. Over 80 percent of the pulp sector in Indonesia is now committed to stopping the destruction of the rainforests, according to Greenpeace. Palm-oil companies already made the same commitment. It also helps that the country’s new president, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, is an advocate for conservation. The work is not done, but let’s celebrate today this huge step in the right direction.
