Last week we reported about the 3D-printed “supercar.” Well, fasten your seatbelts, as here’s another one. While some may still think of bracelets or vases when hearing about 3D printing, another startup aims at transforming the automotive world with the use of a printer. The Arizona-based Local Motors, which plans to launch next year, demonstrated its concept at the Detroit Auto Show. Its prototype, dubbed the Strati, had barely 50 individual parts, beyond the electric power train. Car manufacturers have been using assembly lines that may cost up to $1 billion to set up for over a century. Local Motors plans to set up a series of compact facilities at a fraction of the size and cost.
