Children whose parents are less controlling lead happier lives, researchers say

A lot has been written recently about “helicopter parents” who hover over the wellbeing of their children in a very controlling way. It doesn’t sound very healthy, and in fact, a new study shows that it isn’t. Researchers at the University College London found out that children of more caring, less psychologically controlling parents live happier lives. The study monitored the mental wellbeing of 2,000 participants who were born in 1946 and who completed questionnaires about how well they bonded with their parents. The questions they answered related to issues like “My parents tried to control everything I did”, or “They appeared to understand my problems and worries.” The effect on individuals with parents who exerted less psychological control during childhood was found to improve their mental wellbeing, and these results were still visible during the ages 60-64. So, here’s our parental advice: Relax!
