Traditional methods to fight cancer like radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy, create a lot of collateral damage in the body. That’s why scientists are looking for ways to destroy cancer cells without harming surrounding tissue. A new promising treatment is being developed at the University of Texas at San Antonio. It is called photodynamic therapy, and it uses beams of light to activate chemicals or particles in tumors. A researcher has found a way to use the therapy to alter the pH of tumors so that they commit suicide without harming the rest of the body.
