Beyond its devastating effects on the environment, climate change is a major contributor to refugee flows, the spread of disease, and conflicts over basic resources like food and water. And its not just environmentalists who are claiming this. CIA analysts and U.S military strategists have labeled climate change as a major threat. With that being the case, why is the U.S government spending 28 times as much on military security than climate security? Currently, the climate security budget needs $34 billion to meet its targets, but by redirecting just a fraction of the money funneled towards to the military into the climate budget, more ambitious environmental projects could be achieved without impacting U.S defense negatively. In fact, cutting an used fighter plane program that still doesn’t work would save enough money to build offshore wind farms that could power 320,000 homes. It’s time the U.S reprioritizes its budget.
