Ireland’s Prime Minister is joining the medical staff to fight COVID-19

Before joining politics, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar had been working as a junior doctor in Dublin. Now, as Ireland is battling with the ongoing pandemic, Varadkar has rejoined the country’s medical register and will work one shift a week to help out the overwhelmed health services.

After the country’s healthcare provider has recently appealed to non-working healthcare professionals to “be on call for Ireland”, more than 50,000 medical students and former staff registered for service, including the country’s leader.

Varadkar will assist in conducting phone assessments of people who may have been exposed to COVID-19, joining his parents, sisters, and partner who all work for health services. Inspiring leadership is extremely important in such times of difficulty and uncertainty — the Prime Minister’s commendable act shows that he is well aware of this.
