An energy bill more than 6 percent of a household’s income is considered unaffordable. That’s already a high threshold, but in some parts of the US many of the poorest families pay up to 20 percent. Upon learning this, one activist looked into the matter and found that the reason why low-income families pay so much is because the buildings they live in are often inefficient. Now she’s created a nonprofit that’s on a mission to increase awareness on energy poverty and help educate people on ways to reduce their energy bill.
