As the energy needs of urban areas continue to increase, innovators are looking for new ways to generate energy in unexpected places. One woman in London has created a startup that seeks to harness wind energy from the draft winds created by the Crossrail trains in the city’s underground. The pilot project will use grids of lamellae-covered plastic sheets to generate electricity from the draughty tunnels. The yield is low compared to traditional wind power plants and is not able to power whole cities, but the startup sees itself as just a single element in a mixture of urban energy sources.
