California is well ahead of state targets for sourcing 25 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020. In fact, the Golden State is producing so much renewable energy, particularly from solar, that it’s taking a break from new renewable projects. California is regularly shunting electricity to Arizona and other states (sometimes paying them to do so) to avoid overloading its own power lines. One thing that could tip California’s solar market back into a furious growth period: more ambitious energy targets. That’s why the Senate recently proposed legislation to require 100 percent of the state’s power come from renewables by 2045.
