Superbugs are drug resistant bacteria that have the ability to survive exposure to antibiotics that would kill normal bacteria. Superbugs get much of their resistance from thick jelly like cell walls, called biofilm that has traditionally been difficult for antibacterial products to break through. Researchers from Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland, have invented an antibacterial gel that is made from natural proteins that can kill common super bugs like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococci and E.coli. The scientists will present and explain their new gel at The Science of Medicines conference in Hertfordshire, England on September 8th.
