Eggs have become more popular as people try to cut down on meat consumption and embrace a more ‘flexitarian’ diet. Unfortunately, this also means more eggs are getting wasted than ever before. People in the UK alone are throwing away 720 million eggs every year – three times more than in 2008. The scale of waste has been blamed on overcautious consumers who think that eggs are unsafe to eat past their best-before date – which isn’t true. In most cases, eggs are actually fine for 2-3 weeks after their best-before date, and there’s even a fun little test you can do at home to check the freshness of your eggs to help cut down on edible food needlessly being binned.
