We have good news for bread lovers who suffer from Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. This week, Northwestern University completed a successful trial to alleviate inflammatory responses to gluten in individuals with allergies, using nanoparticle technology.
This nanoparticle technology envelops the problematic allergen with a substance which the body recognizes as harmless debris, allowing macrophages, also known as the vacuum cleaner cells, to remove it without triggering an allergic response.Â
A Phase 2 trial of 34 individuals is the first evidence of efficacy in humans, but the technology has been granted a Fast Track by the FDA, so it will hopefully be approved and more widely available soon. If approved, this technology could potentially be used to treat a wide variety of allergies and autoimmune conditions.Â
