Today’s Solutions: May 06, 2024

This past week we dove into what dining out might look like in a post-COVID world. As one of the first countries to open up public activities again, Italy is giving us a glimpse into returning to normal life again. One big change: no more paper menus.

To see food and beverage options, waiters at Da Enzo, a restaurant tucked away in the Trastevere neighborhood, now hold up a QR code for diners to scan with their smartphones. The QR code unlocks a virtual menu for customers to peruse.

According to owner Maria Chiara Di Felice, some older patrons were initially unhappy with the change, but have come around to appreciate the small added step to minimize contact which could potentially contribute to the continued spread of the virus.

Menu changes are not the only item on the agenda. Tables are all rearranged to be further apart and chefs wear masks, gloves, and safety goggles while preparing meals. Tables and chairs are also disinfected after each party leaves.

The initial return to dining at restaurants will certainly look a bit different from pre-pandemic meals, but these small safety precautions are worth it to get restaurants back in business and customers eating safely.
