New York City’s iconic Empire State Building and its other affiliated buildings are all now powered entirely by wind, making it the country’s largest real estate user of 100 percent green energy.

Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT) has recently signed a three-year contract with sustainable energy provider Green Mountain Energy to power its entire commercial real estate properties with wind energy.

While the Empire State Building has been powered by renewable energy for a decade, the latest update will see its proprietor’s more than 10 million square feet portfolio going green.

The switch, which involves the purchase of over 300 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy, will prevent about 450 million pounds of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere — that’s the equivalent of removing all of New York City’s taxis for one year, turning off every household light in the city for a month or adding two Central Parks.

“We continue to advance our commitment to solutions that reduce our environmental impact. Our tenants now work in carbon-neutral offices and the investment community can recognize our leadership,” said Dana Robbins Schneider, director of energy, sustainability & ESG at ESRT.
