Personal wellness advocates often discuss the importance of “self-care,” but what exactly does self-care mean? The concept has been too often misused and commodified by the beauty and nutrition industries, so today we offer some alternative definitions of self-care that can help you narrow in on a practice that is truly restful, relaxing, and rejuvenating.

Self-nourishing

Self-care is a broad concept, but thinking of it as self-nourishing can help contextualize this practice. Think of it as feeding both your body and mind. Nourish your body with healthy, whole, fresh ingredients, regular exercise, and physical pampering while you nourish your mind and soul with positive affirmation, relaxing activities, and the presence of those that bring you joy and peace.

Self-discipline

Self-care is about relaxation, but it’s also about putting in the effort to be healthy both in mind and body. Self-care means having the discipline to make healthy choices and even to say “no” in situations that will not serve you.

Self-comfort

We most often turn to self-care when we feel lost, hurt, or dejected. Taking part in activities that are good for the mind and body brings us peace and comfort. Be intuitive with your self-care routine and ask yourself what would truly bring you the most comfort in your current situation.

Self-care can take a multitude of forms and the reality is that everyone’s routine will look different based on their lifestyle, priorities, and stressors. We encourage you to use these three subcategories to narrow in on the best self-care practice for you!
