California’s drought-stricken Central Valley farming region still has lots of ground water. However, that water is salty because of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Desalination of that water is the easiest way to provide more fresh water to California’s farms, but conventional desalination is an energy-intensive process driven by fossil fuels. WaterFX, a new San Francisco-based company, provides an innovative desalination technology powered by the sun. The system can produce 200 acre-feet (65 million gallons) of water per acre of solar collection area, making it the most efficient solar desalination system available.
