We’ve talked a lot lately about urban agriculture in The Optimist Daily, from rooftop gardens in New York to London’s subterranean urban farm inside a World War II bomb shelter. Now Japan is kicking it up a notch with a new state-of-the-art urban farm, set to open in 2017. The farm will be fully operated by robots who will take care of planting, harvesting and all the other necessary work, producing a total of 30,000 heads of lettuce in a single day. The urban farm, or rather “vegetable factory” will use ultra-efficient lighting systems that run on renewable energy. The factory’s technology also allows them to recycle 98% of their water usage. And that’s while it already uses less water compared to traditional agricultural techniques.
