When it comes to renewable energy, Iceland is doing it right. The remote island country reportedly meets around 95% of its own electricity needs using the power of its volcanoes and now the UK hopes to enjoy the benefits of geothermal energy as well. The two countries have joined together to create the “UK-Iceland Energy Task Force” to examine the feasibility of constructing 750 miles of undersea cabling to bring geothermal energy to the UK In six months we will learn whether or not the project can be done. If so, British officials believe it could provide a significant part of Britain’s future energy security and help wean them off of fossil fuels for good.
