Getting the entire world connected to the internet may soon be as easy as changing a light bulb. German physicist Harald Hass and his team have created a technology called Li-Fi that uses light waves from LED light bulbs to deliver internet connectivity that is 100 times faster than broadband internet. Li-Fi LED lights work by transmitting data through light waves to a computer or smartphone that acts as a receiver, and the technology itself would be much cheaper than Wi-Fi, costing a little more than the price of a regular LED light. Li-Fi wouldn’t replace Wi-Fi, but would simply provide an ideal solution for bringing internet to places like offices where lights can always be on, or rural villages that could use a solar panel to power the lights which would then provide an internet connection.
