Following the landmark climate deal reached in Paris this past week, San Diego, the eighth-largest city in the U.S, has committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy. The legally binding pledge commits the city to complete its transition and cut its greenhouse gas emission in half by 2035. Officials said they will also shift half of the city’s fleet to electric vehicles by 2020 and recycle 98% of the methane produced by sewage and water treatment. The city expects much of its renewable energy to come from solar power considering the sunny climate in San Diego, but they also expect to generate electricity through wind power as well. With a population well over a million people, San Diego represents the first major U.S city to commit to a complete transition to renewable energy, and will surely inspire other cities to do the same.
