The Obama administration will announce today a halt to new coal mining leases on public lands. The move effectively freezes new coal production and sends a signal to energy markets that could turn investors away from an already flailing industry. The announcement provides another example of the increased boldness with which President Obama is approaching the end of his presidency setting and implementing the priorities that got him elected seven years ago. In his State of the Union address this week, Obama said: “I’m going to push to change the way we manage our oil and coal resources so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet.”
