Coal-burning in China is in significant decline, according to official figures released on Tuesday. The new data is good news for the fight against climate change and shows a major turnaround for one of the world’s biggest polluters as it continues its transition to clean energy; earlier this week, a GlobalData report identified China as the largest developer of renewable energy projects in 2015. China saw a huge increase in coal-burning for power and industry in the last two decades but has suffered serious air pollution as a result. As the use of coal is now declining, we’re likely to see improvements in air quality and health as well.
