Commercial airlines can no longer fly without thinking about the skies they’re polluting. Officials from 23 countries have agreed to set the first international carbon dioxide emissions standard for commercial aircraft with tougher guidelines for new airplane models to meet in 2020. New aircrafts from existing model lines will follow suit in 2023, and there will be a complete cut-off for non-standard aircrafts in 2028. The new standard could cut over 650 million tons of CO2 emissions between 2020 and 2040, or as much as you’d get by taking 140 million cars off the road for a year.
