The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, as a “teach-in day” to raise awareness about environmental problems. Today, Earth Day mobilizes hundreds of millions of people around the globe to demonstrate their commitment to a cleaner planet. Last year, these schoolchildren in Manila, the Philippines, did just that by dancing in front of a “tree of knowledge” made from recycled plastic bottles. For the 40th anniversary, the Earth Day Network is launching an effort to inspire people to take small steps toward stopping climate change.
