A paralyzed man regained control over his right hand and fingers Wednesday using a special technology that transmits his thoughts directly to his hand muscles and bypasses his spinal injury. By connecting a hi-tech sleeve to a chip implanted within the man’s brain, he was able to learn by repetition and arduous practice to focus his thoughts to make his hand pour from a bottle, and to pick up a straw and stir. He was even able to play a guitar video game. The new technology is not a cure for paralysis, but it is one step closer to helping people suffering from paralysis restore critical skills to limbs no longer directly connected to the brain.
