Apple may soon become a major producer of renewable solar energy. The software giant has asked regulatory authorities in the U.S. for the green light to begin selling excess power to consumers as part of its mission to achieve a 100 percent renewable energy goal for its operations. Google, Amazon and Walmart are similarly exploring becoming energy distributors raising the question what the utility of the future will be if companies will be doing the work on their own.
