Plants give a clear indication of the quality of the air they are “breathing”. Members of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado have planted an Ozone Garden—a garden comprised of plants that show visual signs of damage when air quality starts to fall. Though the US environmental standards set ozone contamination limits at 75 parts per million, some of the plants in the garden show signs of distress at 40 parts per million. The 4 plants in the garden include milkweed, snap bean, potato and cutleaf coneflower.
