Providing electricity in countries like Nigeria is a challenge. Only 18 percent of the household in Africa’s largest economy enjoy reliable electricity supply. With the national grid largely unreliable and, in some places, non-existent, Nigerians have been typically forced to generate their own electricity for homes and businesses with expensively maintained, dirty gasoline-powered generators. It’s estimated that half of the country owns generator sets. Solar energy can provide a solution but, so far, has been too expensive to be attractive for most Nigerians. An innovative “pay-as-you-go’ model promises to kickstart solar energy adoption in Nigeria.
