Researchers from MIT have created a solar still made of bubble wrap and other simple materials that can make tainted water fit to drink. Solar stills typically require expensive lenses or other equipment, but this setup allows people to boil and distill water with no extra solar concentrator. The researchers estimate that down the road, they will be able to make large-area solar stills for about one-twentieth the cost of conventional technology, which could help make water more accessible in developing countries where sunlight is ample.
