India is in need of more energy to feed its economy, so to fill the void, the Narendra Modi government is asking spiritual leaders to install solar power unities in their ashrams, or hermitages, and to promote solar energy among millions of their followers. India hopes to create 40,000MW of rooftop solar power capacity by 2022 to stop Asia’s third-largest economy from having power shortages, a large step up from their current capacity of just 740MW. Perhaps it may seem odd for India’s government to turn to Hindu leaders, but consider this: Hinduism’s most revered hymn is dedicated to the sun.
