At the U.N wildlife conference in South Africa, a non-binding proposal to close all domestic ivory trade has been approved. While the international market in ivory has been closed since 1989, legal domestic markets have continued in many countries around the world. The move is not legally binding, but conservationists believe that it is a strong move as it is the first time that the 183 countries that have signed the Convention have a taken a unified position on ivory markets and the protection of elephants.
