When it comes to bringing electricity to the poor in the developing world, solar panels lead. But there are places where solar doesn’t work so well and where there’s abundant wind. However, wind energy requires expensive turbines that poor people cannot afford. Arun and Anoop George from Kerala in India come in. The two brothers have developed a wind turbine at a price of around Rs 50,000 ($750). The turbine measures the size of a ceiling fan and produces three to five-kilowatt hours of electricity on a daily basis. That means free energy for the lifetime of the turbine—20 years—for an average household. See the video.
